A lid usually covers them to prevent passersby from falling into the hole. We may pass by them daily, but we ignore their importance in keeping our sewage system functional and clean. 

Our sewage system is a complex system of pipes. Manholes are used to connect two or more pipes for water supply or sewage. They are located where multiple pipes meet. Manholes can vary in diameter, and many manhole tunnels are not always vertical but can be at a slant or angle. A manhole tunnel needs to be covered properly by a manhole lid or cover that securely fits on the top. Since the manholes can be found in the middle of a road, they need to be level with the road surface so that they do not make the road uneven for vehicles.

Manhole covers usually consist of two shapes: round and square. The shape of the manhole has a functional purpose and is not simply for visual appeal. 


Round Manholes


Manholes located in the middle of a public place, such as a city street or residential area pavements, are of a circular shape. The round shape gives the lid stability and maximum toughness. What makes the round manhole more stable and tightly locked in place because the rounded edges provide a greater surface area against the compression of the surrounding earth, ensuring a tighter fit. 


Square Manholes


For a safe fit, there is nothing better than a circular lid; however, square manholes are more convenient as they make accessibility easier. The straight sides of the square manholes make it easier for cleaning equipment and crew to enter the tunnel without much hassle. Square manholes are commonly constructed in areas where there is an intersection of multiple pipes underground. These portions of pipe networks need more maintenance since multiple pipes are passing within the tunnel, so ease of accessibility is vital.


Manhole Materials 


Manhole covers that are located in areas of high traffic must be made of robust construction that can withstand the weight of the cars. However, a manhole in residential areas doesn't need to be made from an exceptionally tough material, as only people will step on it. Let us look at the various materials used to manufacture manholes. 


Cast Iron: This material is used to forge covers that fit on top of deep manholes since cast iron can withstand a weight of up to 90 tonnes. It is a long-lasting material.


Steel: Steel is used in residential areas. Cover lids of neighborhoods are usually thinner than cast iron lids.


Synthetic: For environments that have a high degree of moisture, synthetic material manhole covers are preferred. These materials are reinforced plastic and fiberglass that are corrosion-resistant and durable.

Open manholes that are deep can pose a high risk for a passerby to fall through them. Moreover, a car's tire can also get stuck in an open manhole. Pressure Release Locking Mechanism


This innovative locking apparatus is fitted in the latest manhole cover designs. Traditional manhole lids that experience flooded roads tend to pop open by the water pressure and float away with the surge. To resolve this problem, the pressure release locking system was invented. This allows water to seep through. These pressure manholes have lids that move up and down within the frame to release the water without getting displaced completely.

The locking lid can be fastened onto a PVC well pipe to establish a tamper-resistant compression seal that can only be opened by the individual with the key. These caps are typically crafted from sturdy plastic or flexible iron with UV resistance and waterproof qualities.
